MISSION VIEJO, CA – After formally announcing his campaign for the 73rd State Assembly District
seat, a region deep in Southern Orange County, Scott Rhinehart secured a powerful endorsement from
Congressman Mike Levin (D-49).
Environmental activist and outspoken congressional representative Mike Levin (D-49) defeated a Republican challenger by a 15% margin in the 2019 Midterm election, replacing Darrell Issa, a Republican who held the seat for the past 18 years.
Scott Rhinehart, a businessman and engaged activist, is vying to replace Asm. Bill Brough, a staunch Republican. Rhinehart made history in 2018, receiving over 44 percent of the vote - the highest vote- total a Democrat has achieved in the 73rd District. In announcing his support of Rhinehart’s run for the State Assembly, Congressman Mike Levin said:
"Scott Rhinehart is the best candidate to represent the 73rd Assembly District. His deep knowledge and understanding of important issues facing the residents of the District, including healthcare as a right for all, climate change and the environmental impact of the 3.6 million pounds of spent nuclear waste being buried at [San Onofre] make him the right candidate for the 73rd Assembly District. I fully support him and his campaign."
Congressman Levin’s congressional district overlaps with the 73rd Assembly district in Southern Orange County. His support will be invaluable as Rhinehart works to become the first Democrat elected in the 73rd Assembly seat.
Rhinehart responded to Congressman Levin’s strong endorsement in this statement:
"I am deeply honored to have the endorsement of Congressman Mike Levin in my race for the 73rd Assembly District. The Congressman is already delivering on his campaign promises to the constituents of the 49th Congressional District. He is an engaged and active member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition and Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
"I appreciate his solid support of the Green New Deal, Medicare-for-all and improving services to our Veterans and service on the Subcommittee on Health, the Subcommittee on Water, Oceans, and Wildlife and The House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis. As a concerned citizen of Orange County, I am very pleased that Congressmen Levin has created a Task Force to study the issues and concerns around San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station."
Cities that are in both districts include: Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente and Ladera Ranch.
